Sri Lanka’s Garden of Strange Delights

Bawa copy

Located seven kms inland from the town of Bentota on Sri Lanka’s west cast, Brief Garden was the creation of Bevis Bawa, brother of the famous Sri Lanka architect Geoffrey Bawa. it’s a hillside garden of just five acres carved from a former rubber planation, and quite miraculous. Narrow paths wind through dense tropical foliage and trees dripping with green tendrils. It can feel wild and untamed but then suddenly you emerge from a dark tunnel of greenery into a clearing with a small amphitheatre, or a classical staircase that cuts a corridor through a swooning avenue of Loxococcus rupicola. Lots of saucy statues too – Bevis was artistically inclined and enthusiastically gay, and his former house shows ample evidence of his devotion to the cause. Among many artist pals, Donald Friend once came for a week and stayed five years. You can book afternoon tea in the main house, served by Bawa’s former estate manager who now owns the property, and a fascinating man with fond memories of the late Bevis Bawa. Tel +94 77 350 9290
