DAY 1: ARRIVE DELHI

Customs and immigration will take 30-45 minutes. Tour representative will meet you at the airport, assist with baggage and transfer you to your hotel near the airport. Depending on your arrival time, meet the group over a welcome drink in the bar.

DAY 2: FLIGHT TO UDAIPUR

Meet with the group and fly to Udaipur. Transfer to hotel Bujera Fort, lunch at hotel. Afternoon at leisure, evening at Bagore Ki Haveli cultural show in Udaipur, dinner on the lakefront rooftop of Jagat Niwas Palace, featured in the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

DAY 3; UDAIPUR

Touring Udaipur, visiting the Jagdish Temple, followed by a tour of the City Palace, one of the largest in all of India. Lunch near the palace will be followed by a leisurely afternoon cruise on Lake Pichola and return to the hotel in mid-afternoon.

DAY 4: DRIVE FROM UDAIPUR TO NARLAI

Drive to Narlai (3.5hrs) with stop at Nagda Temple, set among fields on the edge of a lake and dating from the 10th century AD. Some of the sculptures on the walls of the temple were inspired by the Kama Sutra. Nearby Eklingji Temple is a particularly lovely marble complex begun in the 8th century and a major pilgrimage site. In the evening, after a ceremony that takes place at sunset at the little temple at our hotel, Rawla Narlai, we’ll board bullock carts for a short journey to a stepwell where we’ll dine by the lights of hundreds of flickering oil lamps, serenaded by a veena player singing sacred songs.

DAY 5: NARLAI AND SURROUNDS

If you’re up for it, a vigorous morning walk to the top of Elephant Rock, followed by a relaxing breakfast in the courtyard.

Drive to Ranakpur Temple, a 15th century Jain temple sculpted in white marble and one of the masterworks of Indian devotional architecture.

Followed by lunch on the terrace of Mountbatten Lodge, a small, luxury retreat carved from forest in the Aravalli hills.

Rawla Narlai

DAY 6: NARLAI

A leisurely day to enjoy Narlai, one of the loveliest villages in Rajasthan, with plenty of time to relax at Rawla Narlai. Another chance for an early morning hike to the top of Elephant Rock or a leisurely stroll through the village to the stepwell. We’ll enjoy a guided village walk, and a choice of one of the following: leopard spotting or a bird watching safari to nearby wetlands or a train ride on the local narrow-gauge railway.

DAY 7: DRIVE TO JODHPUR

Drive to Rohet Gahr, a heritage hotel, for lunch, with a stop at Om Banna, probably the only temple where the object of veneration is a motorcycle. After lunch, jeep safari to a village of Bishnois, the world’s first conservationists. Continue to Johdpur, with a brief evening walk through the Clocktower Bazaar to Pal Haveli for a traditional thali dinner.

DAY 8: SIGHTSEEING IN JODHPUR

Touring the incredible Mehrangarh Fort and its palace, followed by the beautiful Jaswant Thad and the surrounding cenotaphs of the royal family. Lunch at the Stepwell Café, latest addition to the city’s smart food scene, followed by a shopping expedition in the boutiques in the square.

Afternoon spent relaxing back at the hotel followed by dinner in the garden with traditional Rajasthani music.

DAY 9: SIGHTSEEING IN JODHPUR

Tour of the bazaars. Udaipur is famous for its street food. We’ll get to sample paliwal kachori, masala chai from the Bhati Tea Stall and sweets from the Janta Sweet Home as well as a legendary lassi stall. We’ll also visit the blue city, the sector of the city inhabited by upper-caste Hindus who painted their houses indigo blue, incredible for photography. Udaipur is also known for its antique shopping, and there’s an optional shopping expedition in the afternoon.

Dinner by candlelight on the terrace at Chokelao, at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort, with the illuminated fort walls on one side and a bird’s-eye view of the city on other.

DAY 10: DRIVE TO SAVISTA RETREAT

Savista is our home for the next four nights, a luxury boutique hotel surrounded by gardens and croplands.  Set just outside Jaipur, it allows us easy access to the Pink City while keeping its madness and mayhem at arm’s length. Savista places a premium on its farm-to-fork credentials. The estate grows its own vegetables and grains free from chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Milk comes from buffaloes fed on the estate’s grass. All meals at Savista are vegetarian, however on two days we’ll be lunching outside, with an opportunity to dine non-vegetarian. This is also a wonderful base from which to experience the timeless rhythms of rural life in Rajasthan.

DAY 11: SAVISTA RETREAT

Savista has a broad repertoire of activities, ranging from leisurely walks or cycling through neighbouring villages, a game of tennis, a session in the spa or relaxing by the pool. Optional activities include a yoga session, a cooking class, a pottery lesson or block printing. These activities need to be booked in advance and they incur an extra charge.

DAY 12: EXPLORING AMER

Amer is the original settlement that was founded in a valley just outside Jaipur, and which later gave rise to the city itself. Its distinguishing feature is the vast and impressive Amer Fort which site on the hilltop above the village, which we’ll spend some time exploring. The village itself is a small delight, with a stepwell, some very fine temples and the Anokhi Block Printing Museum, where we’ll lunch in the café.

Return to Savista in mid-afternoon.

DAY 13: EXPLORING JAIPUR

Cycle rickshaw ride through the old city, visit to the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), the Jantar Mantar, an 18th century astronomical observatory, exploration of the bazaars and lunch at the amazing Caffe Palladio – a touch of Venetian style in the middle of Jaipur.

DAY 14: DRIVE TO AGRA

We’ll break the five-hour drive with a detour to see Chand Baori, a vast stepwell in the village of Abhaneri. In the afternoon we’ll visit Agra Fort followed by a sunset viewing of the Taj Mahal from the far side of the river. Dinner is at Pinch of Spice, a local legend for its North Indian food.

DAY 15: THE TAJ, AND ONWARD TO DELHI

After an early morning visit to the Taj Mahal we’ll drive to Delhi, about a four-hour trip.

Our hotel is located in Friends Colony, a privileged enclave, surrounded by the homes of some of Delhi’s wealthy elite. Dinner that night is in a private dining room at the hotel.

DAY 16: EXPLORING DELHI

We’ll take a guided tour of some of the capital’s outstanding heritage monuments, which involves a mix of walking and driving.  Explore the serene Lodhi Gardens, the Qutb Minar complex and Humayan’s Tomb. Lunch at the Khan Market with a final opportunity for shopping in the market, a favourite for many of the city’s expats. Final dinner will be at Indian Accent in the Lodhi Hotel. The restaurant is the creation of Chef Manish Mehrotra, One of India’s culinary superstars, who brings excitement and ingenuity to traditional Indian dishes, now with restaurants in London and New York. We’ll dine on the tasting menu and it’s sensational, with a choice of either vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals.

DAY 17: A FINAL FAREWELL

Guests will be transported to the airport for their departure flights. There is also an option to stay longer and experience more facets of India. Discuss with us if you’d like some suggestions.
