A Riverboat on the Irrawaddy

Burma 06 copy_tonemapped

The riverboat journey along Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River between the former royal capital of Mandalay and the temple city of Bagan is as old as Kipling, but the thaw in Myanmar’s relations with the wider world have thrust it into the spotlight. Among the deluxe options for the two-nighter, The Road to Mandalay is a crisply luxurious yacht operated by Belmond, formerly the Orient-Express Group. It’s a leisurely pace, with plenty of time to take in a version of the exotic orient that is little more than a sepia-toned memory in most other parts of South-East Asia. Sanctuary Retreats, which brings a silk touch to its luxury safari lodges and expeditionary vessels in some of the world’s wildest places, has recently launched the 40-passenger Sanctuary Ananda on the Irrawaddy.
