Matera Italy
Brand New Day.
Matera is the Cinderella story of southern Italy.
The town sits in a river gorge, where most of the population once lived in sassi, caves bored in the side of the gorge.
Since the 1950s Matera has gone from a malarial slum where infant mortality was close to 50 per cent to a World Heritage zone.
It’s also highly photogenic, a page straight from the Book of Job, and now a favourite for cinematographers looking for a biblical authenticity. It’s very beautiful, especially in the morning which is when I shot this.
Matera’s is a story of redemption.
No matter how lousy things have been in the past, there is always the possibility of something better, and a brighter future is something plenty of us need in 2017.
Happy New Year!
