Nice, France in May
We – parents & 3 adult daughters are celebrating a 21st in Paris in May and have 5 days to fill afterwards (21 – 26) prior to visiting Northern Ireland. We were thinking Nice and having day trips to Monaco and Cannes etc but at the time there is a little film festival and a Grand Prix – would it add to the adventure or just be plain stupid to go, we won’t be buying any pricey tickets to events. ?
Hi Rosemary – if you’re not planning to attend any of the film fest nor the Grand Prix I’d say skip Nice. Both events mean accommodation is going to be hard to find and pricey. If you’re keen to see the Cote d’Azur you might base yourself somewhere else, and there are plenty of worthy candidates. Antibes for example, which has a wonderful market, or pretty little Cassis, both accessible by train from Paris in around five hours, or a quicker flight in the case of Antibes. Here’s a link to a story of mine on Cassis http://www.traveller.com.au/refuge-in-the-riviera-1px75
Another alternative might be to base yourself somewhere inland in Provence and it’s hard to go past St-Remy-de-Provence. Just south of Avignon, it’s a really gorgeous mid-size town which puts you within easy reach of Arles, the villages of the Luberon region and the wonderful antique market at L’Isle sur la Sorgue – another article: http://www.traveller.com.au/time-and-treasure-1nwkr
Finally, some of the art galleries of the region: http://www.traveller.com.au/inspiration-and-strokes-of-genius-26pk8
All of which makes me realise it’s far too long since I was last there! Have fun.
